Ross claims their new Evolution FS is the most durable fly reel they ever built. Can it live up to that promise?

Ross has been in the business since 1973 and hence celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Being in the game for such a long time is always a testament to the quality of the products a company builds. Their “Made in the USA” fly reels have gained many fans amongst fly fishermen mostly due to their tough build. For this season, Ross premiered their new Evolution FS (FS stands for fresh/salt meaning it can be fished both in freshwater and saltwater) reel claiming it’s their toughest reel ever. We’ve put it to the test in different fishing scenarios and tell you what we think.

Out of the box, the FS Evolution portrays quality. It starts with the nice deep blue neoprene pouch. Call me old school, but when talking about a $500+ reel, I expect a nice pouch. It’s almost like when buying a watch you want it to come in a nice box.

The FS Evolution comes in two colors: matte black (pictured above) and matte platinum (silver). In terms of line weight you can choose from four different options: starting with the smallest reel, the #4/5, which is a great option as a standard trout reel on a single handed rod. It continues with the #5/6 (that we tested) which is a great allrounder reel since you can use it on a #6 rod setup for single handed sea trout fishing and just as well on a light double handed setup to swing flies for steelhead.

Next in line is the #7/8 version which lends itself for a salmon setup on a double handed rod or as a great single handed reel for species like pike or big bass. The biggest reel in the lineup is the #9/10 which is the right choice for big 14ft double handed salmon setups or for strong saltwater species.

Performance and Fishing Situations

Like I said in the beginning of this article, Ross claims this reel is the toughest one they ever build. Hence it’s not surprising that the Evolution FS is a rather heavy reel (at least compared to most modern day lightweight reels). It ranges from 5.9 oz (4/5) to 7.7 oz (9/10).Personally, I like it, since I sometimes even value a reel that is a little heavier for a better balance on a double handed setup. Even when using it on a single handed rod for sea trout fishing it didn’t tire my arm quickly. But as you know, tastes are different when it comes to the weight of a fly reel.

In terms of the braking system, the Ross Evolution FS got the best of both worlds from the Ross LTX and the Animas featuring a stacked drag system that is highly resistant to high temperatures (which are created when a strong fish is runinng and a lot of breaking power is applied). I found the drag to do its job really well and to be highly adjustable although I have to admit that in terms of breaking power or startup inertia I couldn’t really tell the difference to the breaking system on the Animas. One thing that I was surprised about when opening the cage of the FS was the fact that the drag did not seem to be sealed (hence make sure to rinse your reel properly in case you use it in the salt). You need a strong and reliable drag system for species like salmon or saltwater predators like striped bass and the drag on the FS is super strong.

The case of the reel is really heavy duty (and a significant factor in the rather high weight of the reel) and features some artwork. One thing that really made the Ross Evolution FS stand out for me though is its handle which is made from canvas micarta and really adds another level of grip, particularly with wet hands. Plus, it also feels really nice with its slightly roughened surface.

Arbor Design & Sound

As a #5/6 version, the FS features an arbor width of 2.22″ which is not really large arbor but not small either. What surprised me during our testing was a retrieval rate of almost 9″/turn that Ross got out of the Evolution FS. I didn’t expect that value to be so high. It’s another pro for using this reel on a light double handed setup.

If you’re a steelhead fisherman you most certainly care about the incoming and outgoing sound of your reel as well. I was positively suprised about both sounds with the FS, since incoming and outgoing are definitely perceivable but not overwhelming – Ross struck a good balance here.

Who’s This Reel For?

During our testing, I’ve grown fond of the Evolution FS and it’s definitely going to get a permanent spot in my lineup. Now who’s this reel for? I’m going to use it mostly for double handed spey style fishing on a #6 setup. It’s ideal to balance a slightly longer rod and you won’t feel its weight as much on such a setup. If you’re a steelhead fisherman looking for a new reel that will last you for a long time, you should definitely consider the Ross FS Evolution.

Who’s this reel NOT for? If you’re looking for a lightweight trout reel to use on a single hand setup, this reel is not ideal due to its heavier weight.

Conclusion

In summary, the Ross Evolution FS Fly Reel is a remarkable piece of fishing equipment. Its allure extends beyond mere aesthetics to performance on the water, which it delivers admirably. Even though it comes at a higher price point ($595 – $695), its longevity and superior performance render it a worthwhile investment for any dedicated fly angler.
