Vallon Heron Ocean – Vintage Style Meets Modern Performance

Leonard Schoenberger

Chasing fish in bright, reflective conditions makes you appreciate a good pair of sunglasses.

Whether it’s a calm alpine lake or a windswept Icelandic river—good sunglasses are more than just a nice-to-have. They’re gear. And after a few months of testing the VALLON Heron Ocean sunglasses, I can safely say they’ve earned a permanent spot in my kit.

Field-Tested on the Water

The first thing I noticed when I put these on was how much less eye strain I felt over a full day on the water. The polarized lenses are sharp and clear, with excellent contrast that made spotting fish easy. I opted for the black lens with the black frame. First and foremost because it’s a great all-round lens choice and I think it looks really cool in all black. This style turns the Heron into a minimalistic and modern pair of shared and means you can wear them on the water but around the city as well.

In case you are looking for something for brighter environments, you’ve got a few lens options depending on your preferences:

Black: Grey tint with 14% VLT

Blue: Brown tint, 13% VLT with a blue mirror

Dark Grey: Grey tint, 12% VLT with silver mirror

All of them offer 100% UV400 protection and are made from 2mm shatterproof polycarbonate, so they’re tough enough to handle getting knocked around in a pack or dropped on some rocks.

Surprisingly Comfortable and Secure

At just 25 grams, they’re featherlight. The frame is made from TR90® Grilamid, which is both flexible and durable. I really like how the adjustable temple ends let me mold them behind my ears so they stay snug—even when I’m hiking into a backcountry spot or sweating under a buff. I have to say that the Heron Ocean come in on the smaller end though. As a rule of thumb, I tend to wear medium-sized sunglasses but these felt a little small which seems to be in line with Vallon’s own size guide, see below.

The leather side shields and detachable center piece aren’t just for style—they do a great job blocking out wind and glare from the sides. It’s a classic glacier-glass look, but it genuinely makes a difference when you’re facing into a bright, reflective scene all day. I didn’t have to squint or deal with light leaking in around the edges like I do with most wraparound designs.

If you want even a little more protection, you can get the optional nose protector. And if you want to use these sunglasses for sports such as fly fishing, I definitely recommend the sport retainer which will make your life on the water easier as you can take off your glasses without having to worry about dropping them into the water.

Nice Touches & What’s in the Box

VALLON ships these with a faux-leather hard case and a microfiber cleaning cloth, which I appreciated. Also: no plastic packaging, which aligns with their sustainability ethos—always a plus.

Final Thoughts on the Vallon Heron Ocean Shades

If you’re into fly fishing, sailing, or just spend a lot of time around water, the Heron Ocean sunglasses are an excellent investment. Coming in at $175, they’re not just stylish—they’re clearly built for serious outdoor use, with real thought given to comfort, protection, and performance.

I’ve tested them in all kinds of light and weather, and they’ve never let me down. Visibility is top-tier, they stay put, and they protect your eyes from sun, wind, and glare without overcomplicating things.

Sure, the retro-glacier look might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I’ll take function over fashion any day—and these happen to deliver both.
